Scores of software companies are adding data visualization capabilities to their products, confirming that visualization is one of the hottest trends in business intelligence.
Adaptive Planning is the latest company to join the data visualization crowd. The provider of cloud-based corporate performance management solutions yesterday introduced Adaptive Discovery, a business intelligence application that employs dashboards and scorecards to provide an intuitive and interactive way for managers to access, analyze and explore financial and operational data.
"Dashboards, scorecards and visualization capabilities allow our customers to understand and explain the stories behind the numbers at a far deeper level," said John Herr, CEO of Adaptive Planning.
Adaptive Discovery's features include:
- Interactive drill down, including a hierarchical drill tree that shows the original information and subsequent drill path
- Automated alerts, based on variances from ranges or statistical algorithms
- Sophisticated analytics, including linear or polynomial trend lines, moving averages, histograms, correlation charts and waterfall analyses
- Mobile device support
The solution is geared toward CFOs, sales executives and other business users who typically rely heavily on spreadsheets for data reporting and analysis.

Adaptive Planning is used by more than 1,200 organizations worldwide, including AAA, Boston Scientific, CORT, Konica Minolta, NetSuite, Philips and Vail Resorts. It ranked as the eighth-fastest growing company in Silicon Valley on the Deloitte Technology Fast 500 list. NetSuite, a provider of cloud-based financials/ERP software suites, offers a specialized version of Adaptive Planning as the NetSuite Financial Planning module.
